Jupiter String Quartet named to the CMS Two residency program for outstanding young artists.

August 8, 2006 —The Chamber Music Society is pleased to announce the appointment of the Escher String Quartet and the Jupiter String Quartet to its prestigious CMS Two program. Regarding the unprecedented selection of two ensembles, the Society’s Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han said:

We could not be more thrilled to welcome these amazing young quartets to our family of performers.  They possess world-class technique and great musical depth, and will make major contributions to the Society’s musical fabric, while absorbing all that CMS’s artists, guest artists, and the New York musical scene have to offer.

The quartets were chosen through a series of taped and live auditions that included a record number of ensembles.  The quartets join the present roster of twenty-one musicians for a two year residency beginning in the 2007-2008 season, during which they will appear regularly, as quartets and as collaborators.  They will be heard on the Society’s main stages, in Rose Studio Concerts including the New Music Series, on tour, in broadcasts and recordings, in master classes, and in educational presentations.

The Chamber Music Society Two program was inaugurated eleven years ago under the artistic leadership of David Shifrin.  Its past members form a virtual who’s who of today’s most active young musicians, including violinists Jennifer Frautschi, Hilary Hahn, and Colin Jacobsen; pianists Jonathan Biss, Lang Lang, and Orion Weiss; the Borromeo, Brentano, Miami, Miró, and Daedalus Quartets; and Imani Winds.

Past BISQC winners named as CMS Two artists include the Miró Quartet (BISQC 1998) and the Daedalus Quartet (BISQC 2001).
