Melba and Orville Rollefson Residency Announced

March 14, 2007 – The Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC) is thrilled to announce the creation of the Melba and Orville Rollefson Residency (August 20 to September 2, 2007) for a young string quartet at the 2007 Banff International String Quartet Competition.

The goals of the residency include:

  • professional experience in community outreach performances (August 20 – 27)
  • professional development through coaching sessions with celebrated chamber musicians
  • exposure to a world-class standard of chamber music, and artistic inspiration through attendance at all competition events, including performances and lectures (August 28 – September 2)

Residency Details

The quartet selected to participate in the residency will serve as musical ambassadors for BISQC, presenting concerts and other events, as requested, during the week leading up to BISQC as part of an initiative called “Quartet in the Community.” The concerts will be no longer than one hour in length and will include traditional concert settings, house concerts, and informal concerts in non-traditional spaces throughout the Banff area and surrounding communities.

Beginning August 28, the quartet is invited to all BISQC events including lectures, performances, receptions, and special events. In addition, the quartet will have the opportunity to work with BISQC special guests including John Largess (Miro String Quartet); Phillip Ying (Ying Quartet), and Geoff Nuttall (St. Lawrence String Quartet).

All expenses for this residency will be covered including air fare, program fee, shared accommodation, meals, and tickets to BISQC performances.

In addition each member will receive a performance stipend of $1,250 for community concert/events. Total number of concert/events will not exceed 16.

Applications and Eligibility

Applications from quartets whose members are all under the age of 25 and who did not apply to the 9th BISQC will be accepted until April 30, 2007.
