9th Banff International String Quartet Competition

RBC Awards
Prizes for the 9th Banff International String Quartet Competition included:
- 1st prize $20,000 — TinAlley String Quartet
- 2nd prize $12,000 — Zemlinsky Quartet
- 3rd prize $ 8,000 — Ariel Quartet
- 4th prize $ 5,000 — Tokai Quartet
First prize also included:
- A quartet of bows by internationally-renowned Canadian bow maker François Malo.
- A European and North American concert tour to be arranged by The Banff Centre.
- The offer of a residency at The Banff Centre which includes the production of a promotional compact disc, recorded and produced by The Banff Centre’s Music & Sound Program.
In total the value of the first prize is in excess of $55,000.
Other prizes include:
- Székely Prize — $3,000 — Ariel Quartet
For the best performance of a Bartók string quartet during the Recital Round. - Canadian Commission Prize — $2,000 — Koryo String Quartet
For the best performance of a new work by Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for the competition.
All monetary prizes are listed in Canadian dollars.
All nine quartets who participated in the competition will also be included on a special commemorative recording. This recording will be produced after the competition from recordings made during the competition by The Banff Centre’s Music & Sound audio engineers.
