Digital Media 101: The Value of Digital Media is an introductory workshop designed for community and economic development professionals who are interested in learning more about the potential returns of investing in the digital media industry. The workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to develop an understanding of digital media, the digital media industry, and the industry’s potential as an economic and community development engine in Alberta. The workshop is targeted at economic development, community development, and financial services professionals who either currently work with digital media companies or may have the opportunity to do so in the future.
Participants will be introduced to the concept of digital media and current digital media jargon. They will explore the current state of the digital media industry, with a particular focus on Alberta, and explore what lies ahead for innovation in our province.
On the practical side, participants will be given an opportunity to see and hear about digital media in action. With interactive tutorials from industry experts on blogging, pod casting, and wikis, participants will learn to translate digital media into their day to day business operations. They will also be given the opportunity to hear from and dialogue with a variety of digital media companies and educators from across Alberta. These experiences will allow participants to develop a greater appreciation for digital media and its potential as an economic and community development engine. It will also give them an opportunity for a behind-the-scenes look at how digital media companies function.
With a wealth of talent and experiences among program participants, networking opportunities will be available for participants to discuss and explore how they can support and build the digital media industry within their community. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will have a basic understanding of the digital media industry and its potential for economic growth. Armed with this knowledge, participants will be challenged to go back to their organizations and communities with the goal of taking positive action to build Alberta’s digital media industry, including being strong advocates for the digital media community.
