Calgarian Nicole Mion is an accomplished choreographer, filmmaker, and installation artist whose works have been produced at the Lincoln Centre (New York), High Performance Rodeo (Calgary), Los Dias de la Danza (Cuba), Yerba Buena Arts Centre (San Francisco), and the National Arts Centre’s Alberta Scene (Ottawa). Nicole is a celebrated Banff Centre alumnus who has attended in many different areas of The Banff Centre including Theatre, and the Banff New Media Institute.
At the 2006 Banff Summer Arts Festival Nicole screened her new video dance installation That Thing Between Us, a project she worked on during her stay at The Banff Centre. This 15-minute installation piece features two projections on opposing walls with a third channel in the middle. The performers in the piece face each other in the opposing screens and between them the viewer can see what the two performers are doing when they’re together. All three videos are talking to each other and are interrelated. The piece captures the minutia of a relationship, exploring what brings us together and what keeps us apart. That Thing Between Us explores the relationship between the two performers on the screens and the audience. The viewer has to make choices as to what they will watch and when, this creates a different experience for each viewer every time they watch the piece.
"BNMI offered many opportunities for this project, unavailable anywhere else, including its equipment, skilled staff, and a community of like-minded individuals willing to investigate, coordinate, create, and move mountains for the project. I am a big advocate of the Centre. It has helped me transform as a creator, create work opportunities, and explore ideas."
