City University of Hong Kong Continues Educational Partnership with The Banff Centre in 2008

Building on two previous years of successful international educational collaboration with the Faculty of Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong, Banff New Media Institute recently hosted two students at The Banff Centre from June through August 2008.

Under the supervision of Lead Mobile Researcher Angus Leech and former Mobile Lab Applications Engineer Rupinder Deol, Hilary Hu (Ziyan) and Phoenix Li (Hui Yi) became part of BNMI’s A.R.T. Mobile Lab team, helping to facilitate Tracklines demonstrations on the Hoodoos Trail, create software and debug code, and build hardware prototypes. The students also assisted BNMI with other events during their stay.

While in Alberta, Hilary and Phoenix have also been able to undertake many exciting Canadian cultural activities including attending the Calgary Stampede, visiting Lake Louise, hiking Tunnel Mountain, riding the Gondola to Sulphur Mountain’s summit, relaxing in Banff Upper Hot Springs, traversing the Columbia Icefields, dancing at Aurora, and challenging The Banff Centre’s indoor climbing wall.

In early August, BNMI was also honoured with a visit from City University’s Professor Anthony Fong. While Banff was the last stop on an exhaustive tour of North American educational partners, Dr. Fong’s visit was well timed since he was fortunate enough to be able to attend Meaningful Media, a presentation at The Banff Centre by visiting guest speaker Dr. Gino Yu from the School of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. During the visit, the two Hong Kong mentors discovered they share a common educational and professional background in software development and creativity.

Banff New Media Institute and The Banff Centre thank City University of Hong Kong and both Hilary and Phoenix for their tremendous intellectual and cultural contributions to our programs. We wish them the very best of success in their educational pursuits and future careers. We have gained as much knowledge and cultural insight from them, as they have from us and are positive that they will be strong additions to any team, perhaps leading the way as Hong Kong’s brightest entrepreneurs yet.
