A highly anticipated triennial event, the Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC) is one of the leading international music competitions. For six exhilarating days, 10 of the world’s best young string quartets perform for a distinguished jury and an enthusiastic audience in the quest to win this prestigious competition.

Recital Round

Tuesday, August 28, 2:00 and 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, August 29, 10:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.

During the first two days of the competition, all 10 quartets perform a Haydn Quartet followed by a Bartók quartet.

Romantic Round

Thursday, August 30, 10:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.

All 10 quartets perform a complete quartet of their choice from the Romantic or Nationalist repertoire of the 19th century.

Canadian Commission Round

Friday, August 31, 10:30 a.m.

All 10 quartets perform in the world premiere of Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy’s Dark Energy, co-commissioned by The Banff Centre and CBC.

Beethoven or Schubert Round

Saturday, September 1, 10:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.

All 10 quartets perform a Beethoven or Schubert quartet of their choice.

Finals

Sunday, September 2, 7:30 p.m.

$28 Arts Lovers Passholders

The four finalist quartets perform Webern’s Six Bagatelles followed by either a quartet from Beethoven Opus 18 or one of the 10 celebrated Mozart quartets in this exhilarating final evening of the competition. The evening finishes with the presentation of the RBC Awards.

All performances take place in the Eric Harvie Theatre.
