NexenSeeking Nexen Chair in Aboriginal Leadership

The Banff Centre, Canada’s premier centre of Aboriginal leadership and management development programming, and the country's oldest institution for offering such programming, is looking for a highly motivated individual — a scholar/practitioner — with a demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal communities to hold the newly-created Nexen Chair in Aboriginal Leadership. The successful applicant will work with Aboriginal communities and conduct groundbreaking research on the critical success factors behind leading Aboriginal communities and organizations in Canada.

Focus: The Nexen Chair will develop a program of applied research in consultation with Aboriginal communities, the Centre’s director of Aboriginal Leadership and Management, and an advisory committee. The program will focus on Aboriginal leadership, integrating one or more of the following themes: Aboriginal community development, Aboriginal business development, good governance, and self government in Aboriginal communities.

Activities: The Nexen Chair in Aboriginal Leadership will:

  • Plan and develop the long-term program of applied research activity
  • Lead an applied research project and seek funding to support it
  • Promote and identify best practices and serve as a “researcher-in-residence” at The Banff Centre at least twice annually
  • Prepare research reports and disseminate the results
  • Connect with Aboriginal communities, foster active engagement, and build relationships with Aboriginal communities in support of Banff Centre Aboriginal Leadership and Management programs
  • Participate in Aboriginal Leadership and Management programs at The Banff Centre.

Qualities and qualifications: Applicants may be an academic or practitioner — preferably having a foot in both worlds. Academics will possess an advanced degree (preferably a PhD) in a discipline including native studies, law, political science, administrative studies, management, sociology, anthropology, economics, resource management, and environmental studies. Practitioners may bring senior service experience in organizations including community development, Aboriginal government, NGOs, education, or government.

Term: The Nexen Chair will be appointed by the Centre’s vice-president, programming, on the recommendation of the selection committee. The term is expected to be from one to three years, based on one-year renewal appointments. It is anticipated that several different individuals will participate in this opportunity over its 10-year duration. Reappointment will be based on the needs of the program, agreed-upon goals and measures, and a performance review.

To apply: Please email your resume and a cover letter that outlines your interest in and qualifications for this opportunity to Janice Tanton at Janice_Tanton@banffcentre.ca or call 1.888.255.6327 for more information. Upon review, The Banff Centre will invite finalists to complete proposals, to determine the finalist selection.

Application Deadline: July 31, 2008
