Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®
Consulting Psychologists Press, Inc.
The MBTI or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® is an instrument for measuring a person’s preferences, using four basic scales with opposite poles. Based on the breakthrough work of Carl Jung, the MBTI instrument was developed by the mother-daughter team of Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers.
The four scales are:
- extraversion / introversion
- sensate / intuitive
- thinking / feeling
- judging / perceiving
The various combinations of these preferences result in 16 basic personality types, and types are typically denoted by four letters – for example, INTJ (Introversion, Intuition with Thinking and Judging) – to represent one’s tendencies on the four scales.
By helping all members of an organization discover their own personality types and learn about the types of others, the understanding of and appreciation for one another’s strengths and challenges can be increased.
