Inspiring leadership

The Banff Centre’s Environmental Management System guides the future development of the Centre giving consideration to our ecological footprint, the emission of greenhouse gases, and overall environmental impact. The Centre understands our choices influence and impact our staff, participants, and guests, as well as the greater environment, beyond the boundaries of Banff National Park. The Centre strives for continual improvements in our environmental management results, and openly monitors and communicates our successes through well-recognized rating programs.

Creating environmental benefits

The Environmental Screening Report for the Centre’s 2005 Area Redevelopment Plan concludes that the planned projects will have significant environmental benefits, including: enhancing wildlife movement, increasing montane landscaping, implementing better storm water management, reducing the use of irrigation, reducing light pollution, and improving energy efficiency. The Report concludes that the proposed projects will have “no net negative” environmental impacts, and that the cumulative environmental impact will be positive.

The Revitalization project

Respect for and preservation of the environment is an integral component of the Centre’s Revitalization project. This project will enhance the Centre’s creative, educational, and cultural programs, while at the same time reducing the Centre’s net environmental impact. Environment friendly initiatives of the Revitalization project include environmental screening for all new building and redevelopment sites on campus, the integration of the project with our National Park and World Heritage Site setting, campus greening, no-net growth, and the creation of environmental benefits. The Centre is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for all new buildings that are part of the Revitalization project.

Think Green Campaign

The annual Think Green Campaign has been established to encourage staff to reduce their energy consumption. Each year an Environmental Fair is held for Banff Centre staff, guests, participants, and the community.

Green Leaf™ Eco-Rating

In 2003, The Banff Centre was awarded a 4-Leaf rating by the Audubon Green Leafô Eco-Rating Program, the environmental rating service of the Hotel Association of Canada. The program provides assurance that audited lodging facilities have met environmental best practices standards that are required for their rating of one to five Green Leafs. The Banff Centre’s has recently re-applied to have their rating reviewed.

Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP)

The Centre has enrolled in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP). ACSP is an education and certification program that helps organizations and businesses protect the environment while enhancing their bottom line. The program offers information and guidance to help participants implement an environmental management plan that improves efficiency, conserves resources, and promotes conservation efforts. Audubon International awards certification to publicly recognize and reward the environmental achievements and leadership of ACSP members.
