Canada’s first family of Celtic music

Jaybirds
Cape Breton’s The Barra MacNeils are back for an evening of their beautiful songs, lively instrumental tunes, and seasonal favourites as part of their annual Christmas tour. As one of Canada’s premier Celtic groups, The Barras are steeped in Cape Breton tradition and musical artistry, and this diverse, talented family continues to wow audiences around the world with their captivating vocals, harmonies, and extraordinary musicianship. They have released nine recordings, headlined many festivals, won many awards, appeared on numerous TV and radio specials, and recorded their live Christmas Concert Special which continues to play annually on television in Canada and the US. Their new, superbly-crafted CD All At Once features the addition of siblings Ryan and Boyd MacNeil, delivering an exhilarating and rejuvenated sound. With a variety of instrumental and vocal colour now at their command, the band likes to work traditional melodies through new and interesting musical combinations. Add in the ability to sing in Gaelic and you have a sonic palette that is both rare and worth running through fire to hear. The atmosphere of the songs and music is full of the warmth, scent and beauty of Cape Breton, reflecting the timeless beauty of the music yet marked by their own special and contemporary stamp. Whether singing haunting ballads or blazing out fiery, fast reels, this very talented family continue to win over listeners and audiences with their distinctive brand of Celtic flavour. It’s been twenty years since the Barra’s first performed as a family band, but despite the miles they have travelled, the band still sounds as fresh as the day they started. In fact better with the expanded version, performing as a finely tuned instrument that smoothly ticks and purrs along, and is proudly displayed for all to enjoy.
