Constantinople — From Castille to SamarkandFriday, April 13, 2007 – 8 p.m.
Without hesitation, a performance by artists who deserve five stars. — La Presse In this unusual and wholly engaging performance, the instrumental ensemble Constantinople undertakes a fascinating musical journey that draws inspiration from a fifteen century travel diary. One of the finer early music ensembles around, these superb musicians, playing on authentic instruments including lute, recorders, cornetto, and viola da gamba as well the oud, setar, santur, and tomback, conjure up the sounds of medieval Europe and Asia with stops in Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Armenia, Persia, and Uzbekistan. In exploring the musical richness and traditions of these times and places, the group accomplish their goal both with existing music and with their own creations. Credible, erudite, sensitive, and novel, Constantinople with their skill, sensitivity, and improvisation take you on an exceptional voyage. For more information visit their website. |
