Baka BeyondTuesday, August 14, 2007 – 8 p.m.
Anyone who has witnessed a Baka Beyond live show will testify to the pure unadulterated high that is evoked by their uplifting yet haunting songs. — Drumbeat Once again, the Margaret Greenham Theatre will ring with the pulsating rhythms and musical genre-benders of African-Celtic fusion group Baka Beyond. Inspired by the Baka people and music in Cameroon, and with members from West Africa, the UK, and France, Baka Beyond commingles West African folk sounds with traditional music and songs from Scotland, Ireland, and Brittany to create a sumptuous musical smorgasbord. They discovered a common ground/comfort zone where fiddle and subtly effervescent electric guitar can soulfully wail over ebullient African percussion, and where Gaelic and African languages sound perfectly natural side-by-side. Critically acclaimed and festival favourites, Baka Beyond presents concerts that are lively affairs where a crackling mix of powerful beats, fiery rhythms, spectacular dancing, and brilliant musicianship combine in an uplifting, irresistible musical celebration that will leave you exhilarated and smiling.
