Margaret Greenham Theatre
Tickets: Adult $23 Senior, Student & Child $21
Playbill special: $18
Trumpeter and composer David Buchbinder of the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band teams up with Juno-winning Cuban pianist and composer Hilario Duran and a crew of top-notch musicians to present something very special — an unprecedented and exuberant Klezmer-Afro-Cuban-jazz fusion. Odessa / Havana is a high-powered collision of two great musical styles predated but not predicted by the Jewish-fuelled, American mambo craze of the 1950’s. Working from the roots of each tradition and finding many areas of musical commonality, Buchbinder and Duran have crafted a sound that is exciting, fresh, and compelling as it challenges listeners to step outside their musical comfort zone. While Odessa and Havana are many miles apart, their musical associations are many-faceted, multi-layered, and rich, rooted in a common ancestry. Sparked by their mutual conviction of the suitability of these two magnificent sounds as compatible partners and bolstered by their common love of high-powered, passionate music, Buchbinder and Duran will present both traditional and original compositions with a fresh, interpretative vision of connected genres — an irresistible mix of Bulgar and Bembe, Sher and Son Montuno, Hora and Habanera. Don’t miss this exciting journey of musical discovery.
