Sierra Leone’s Refugee All StarsSaturday, March 1, 2008 – 8:00 p.m.
Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars transform and uplift the human spirit with an infectious fusion of traditional West African music, roots reggae, hip-hop and traditional folk — the results are an earthy, emotionally charged and indomitable sound. Survivors of the civil war in Sierra Leone, the core of the band landed in a West African refugee camp and found solace and inspiration through music, forming a band that would go on to travel the world. Following ringing endorsements from the likes of Keith Richards, Paul McCartney and Angelina Jolie, the band embarked on a rapturously received international tour and released their acclaimed album Living Like a Refugee, a collection of songs that decries the insanity of war and calls out for social justice while celebrating the resiliency of the human spirit and the healing power of music. With personal tales and having survived unimaginable tragedy, they have become an inspiration and symbol of hope for all, spreading their message of peace, love, and redemption in a “can’t help but dance” show.
