Irene Prothroe (nee Powlan, 1925-1989) taught in the Banff Centre Theatre Department from 1958-1970 and served as Head of the Musical Theatre Division from 1970-1974.  After her studies with Maria Ouspenskaya at the American Repertory Theatre in Los Angeles (1946-1949), the Shakespeare Foundation Group (1949), and Morris Carnovsky and Hanya Holm in New York (1950), she taught in the Theatre Department at the University of British Columbia (1954-1957).  She completed a B.A. at the University of Alberta (1960) and a B.Ed. at the University of Calgary (1963), directed performances at the Calgary Arts Centre Theatre (1960-1964), and served as a drama advisor to the University of Calgary (1961-1974), concurrent to acting in and directing productions at the Banff Centre.  She worked as a radio drama producer for CBC Calgary (1974-1981) and founded the 85th Street Players, a touring dinner theatre group, in Calgary in 1982.

Fonds consists of production files, correspondence, scrapbooks, School of Fine Arts files, and radio scripts.
