This free event begins at 7 p.m. in the gallery and includes a talk by Banff public art competition winner, Eric Robertson, readings by author Ben Gadd, as well as the launch of the latest Banff Curatorial Institute publication, Making a Noise!
Edited by Lee-Ann Martin, Making a Noise! Aboriginal Perspectives on Art, Art History, Critical Writing and Community is a collection of essays by leading Canadian and international curators and artists. The fifth in a series of books about curating and contemporary art, this publication rethinks the role of Aboriginal art and curatorial practice in contemporary culture. This collection of writings explores the exhibition and display of Aboriginal art including issues of repatriation of culturally significant artifacts, the role of the curator, the institution, and community. This book features fourteen essays by leading Canadian and international curators and artists including: Kathleen Ash-Milby, Marie Bouchard, Joane Cardinal-Schubert, Nika Collison, Vincent Collison, Brenda L. Croft, Guy Sioui Durand, Richard Hill, Candice Hopkins, Jim Logan, Lee-Ann Martin, Catherine Mattes, Meagan Tamati-Quennell, and Jim Vivieaere.
Editor Lee-Ann Martin is the curator of Contemporary Canadian Aboriginal Art, Canadian Museum of Civilization, Gatineau Quebec and was a curatorial fellow for the Walter Phillips Gallery from 2001-2004. She has written many essays and presentations on critical issues in contemporary First Nations art in Canada and will be reading a selection from her writing in Making a Noise!
In conjunction with the Making a Noise! book launch, Aboriginal artist Eric Robertson will discuss his past projects and trace the development of his winning sculpture for the Town of Banff public art competition to be unveiled this summer. As part of this event, acclaimed author Ben Gadd will read from his novel, Raven’s End.
The Walter Phillips Gallery hosts Talk & Toast: Eric Robertson & Making a Noise! as a celebration of the continued achievements of the Aboriginal arts community.
