Awarded the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, Edward P. Jones is the author of an essential and surprising story of pre-Civil War America. His first novel, The Known World, threads itself into the lives of slaves, former slaves, and white and black slave-owners in a fictional Virginia town in the 1850s. Winner of the Pulitzer and the National Book Critics’ Circle Award, it is a book that The Washington Post’s Jonathan Yardley called “the best new work of American fiction to cross my desk in years.”
This month, Jones is at The Banff Centre to work with the Israeli translator of The Known World as part of the Banff International Literary Translation Centre (BILTC), the only program of its kind in North America, affording translators from around the world the time and space to work on current publication projects, often directly with the writers whose work they’re translating.
During the three-week program, from June 12 to July 1, participants gather for workshops and discussions with invited authors, as well as senior translators including Mexican poet Silvia Pratt, Franco-Ontarian novelist and translator Daniel Poliquin, and U.S. translator Michael Henry Heim, director of the Slavic languages department at UCLA.
In addition to Jones, participating authors this year include Canadian novelists Dionne Brand, Gil Courtemanche, Nadine Bismuth, and Michael Redhill, poet and songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie, and non-fiction writer Sharon Butala. Open to translators from around the world translating literature from the Americas into a variety of languages, and Canadian, U.S., and Mexican translators working on current projects in fiction and nonfiction. This year’s program will feature translations involving 11 languages, including French, Arabic, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Hebrew, Slovenian, Zoque, and Russian.
