Most people don’t know that the Rolston Recital Hall at The Banff Centre, which hosts several hundred music concerts every year, is also home to one of the Centre’s state of the art audio recording studios. Every concert in the Hall is recorded by audio engineers, in Banff to finish professional development that often includes masters- and PhD-level education. Their work has won Grammies, Junos, and Oscars, but it’s still one of the best kept secrets inside The Banff Centre’s artistic programming.

On July 19, the Centre’s audio engineers will present a special behind-the-scenes look at the art and technology of audio with the public event Live from the Studios in the Rolston Recital Hall. Audiences will see a live concert presentation of Georges Enesco’s piece for woodwinds, Dixtuor. Screens behind the musicians will show the simultaneous process of live recording and mixing as the concert unfolds. Audio participants will also be on hand to explain the process, and the audience will hear the professionally recorded version of the piece shortly after it’s been played live.

The Banff Centre’s audio program draws talented individuals with diverse technical and artistic backgrounds from around the world and is internationally renowned for providing exceptional professional development opportunities through unique work-study programs. The Centre’s recording and editing facilities make the program especially attractive for musicians, engineers, and researchers in the audio field. Engineers in the work-study program record an average of 20 high quality CD productions and approximately 250 concerts each year, and also work on audio post-production for film and television.
