PLAN B, a curatorial space
Walter Phillips Gallery, The Banff Centre
Opening reception and curator’s talk: Thursday, November 2, 7 to 9 p.m.
A 30-minute series of images paired with sound, French installation artist Claude Closky’s Journal builds to become a seamless flow of media, directing the viewer to make associations between pictures and sounds, each influencing the other. Curated by Joseph del Pesco, Journal will be installed in the Walter Phillips Gallery’s PLAN B space from November 2 to January 7.
During his early career, Closky investigated taxonomic systems, the ordering of images, sounds, and ideas to create new forms. A highly respected artist who works with contemporary information systems – the internet, databases, computer interface, video, and sound – Closky’s latest work often focuses on personal response to fragments of culture, remixing media and reworking content.
For del Pesco, Journal’s pairings of sound and image can eventually blur together, becoming part of the contentious associations we have with the constant surround of mass media. “The pairings simultaneously emphasize the power of the media on view and, by accumulation, remind us of the numbing effects of its mass proliferation,” he says. “Like a streaming news aggregate, we sit back and experience the world washing over us.”
Del Pesco will give a curator’s talk on Journal during the opening reception on Thursday, November 2.
