Ah, movie night at home — a couple of friends, your favourite comfy chair, and a personalized introduction to recent video works from around the world delivered by curator Joseph del Pesco. Presented by the Walter Phillips Gallery, the Domestic Multiplex series brings video art directly into the homes of Bow Valley residents. Home-screenings of the video program Heroes & Amateurs are available from November 3 to 24 and can be arranged by calling 403-762-6680. The program is limited to ten home-screening opportunities available by appointment, evenings and weekends.
All home-screenings of the Domestic Multiplex video program Heroes & Amateurs will include four separate semi-narrative artist videos. Either through the actual video artist or through subjects or actors, each video presents amateurs who play heroes in diverse ways. With each video the viewer is also provided with additional information about the amateurs themselves.
The first two videos to be screened are from the U.S. and shot in indoor settings. Moby Dick was created by New York/Berlin-based artist Guy Ben Ner and is a low-tech and humorous interpretation of the well-known story. The Forbidden Zone, by American artists Harrell Fletcher and Chris Johanson, is a recreation of a “Star Trek” episode that allows David Jarvey, a person who is developmentally disabled, to play the part of a character with whom he identifies. The second two videos to be screened are Canadian and shot in outdoor settings. Northern, by Vancouver-based Althea Thauberger, is a single continuous shot of a clear cut section of forest that has spiritual undertones and speaks to the logging industry. Long Beach, Led Zep depicts amateur musician Kevin Schmidt blasting the song “Stairway to Heaven” over an amplified electric guitar in front of crashing waves at Pacific Rim National Park.
