Alumni from past music and opera programs highlight The Banff Centre’s 75th Anniversary Gala concert on Saturday, July 5 to celebrate The Banff Centre’s 75th anniversary. Opera sensations Richard Margison and Tracy Dahl will be joined on-stage by artists from the Opera as Theatre and Music Performance programs in an evening that also includes a performance of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto by classical pianist Jon Kimura Parker.

The gala concert is part of a weekend of Banff Summer Arts Festival festivities, which will include a book launch for Inspiring Creativity in the Bentley Chamber Music Studio. The book celebrates the Centre’s 75 years through essays, short stories, poetry, art works, current and archival photography, set designs, musical scores, and in-depth interviews with faculty and alumni. The Banff Centre’s annual outdoor BBQ will take place on the Music and Sound building’s patio after the book launch and prior to the gala concert on July 5.

The anniversary weekend will also include two performances in The Club by Juno Award-nominee Jill Barber, and Red Sky Performance will take to the stage on three occasions throughout the weekend with a new production, Tono (Higher, Faster, Stronger)

On July 4, the Music for a Summer Evening concert series features Barry Shiffman, the Centre’s director of Music programs, leading a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, followed by Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata performed by celebrated Chilean-American cellist Andrés Díaz and Canadian pianist Jeanie Chung. Classical music will also be performed on Sunday, July 6 in the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, the opening day of the Music in the Gallery series.
