For immediate release Walter Phillips Gallery showcases innovative and challenging survey of contemporary Alberta artistsThe 2005 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art As the province of Alberta celebrates its centennial this year, the Walter Phillips Gallery at The Banff Centre and The Edmonton Art Gallery celebrate a biennial — opening their doors to some of the most interesting contemporary art in this province. The Walter Phillips Gallery will proudly host the opening of the fifth incarnation of the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art, presented from February 26 to April 17. After its run in Banff, the Biennial will be remounted at The Edmonton Art Gallery, opening to the public May 21 and closing on September 4 in Edmonton. Curated by The Edmonton Art Gallery’s chief curator Catherine Crowston and Anthony Kiendl, director of visual arts and the Walter Phillips Gallery at The Banff Centre, the Biennial gathers together the work of 23 Alberta artists in all media. Crowston and Kiendl travelled the province, meeting with established and emerging artists. “The Biennial offers an extended look into the creative practice of a range of artists,” Crowston says. “A number of the artists in the Biennial will spend seven weeks leading up to the exhibition creating new, never-before-seen works.” During these seven weeks leading up to the exhibition, Faye HeavyShield, Mark Clintberg, Paul Jackson, Andrew King, Lyndal Osborne, and Chris Millar will be preparing these new works specifically for the Biennial. During its run at the Walter Phillips Gallery, the exhibition will convert the artists’ studios into gallery spaces. “We’ll open up our studio doors to the public,” Kiendl says. “We want to give the public an opportunity to experience where and how art is created. Studio spaces will become exhibition spaces, navigating viewers through the thoughts, materials, and the excitement of contemporary art.” Artists participating in the 2005 Alberta Biennial are: Tom Andriuk, Simon Black, Dianne Bos, Rebecca Bourgault, Michael Campbell and Janice Rahn, Mark Clintberg, David Diviney, Clay Ellis, Faye HeavyShield, David Hoffos, Liz Ingram, Paul Jackson, Andrew King, Lylian Klimek, Mary-Anne McTrowe, Chris Millar, Cherie Moses, Lyndal Osborne, Mireille Perron, Tanya Rusnak, Marc Siegner, and Nicholas Wade. Since 1996, the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art has provided exciting opportunities to see the art produced by Alberta artists. From its inception, the Biennial has presented the work of more than 100 artists to audiences across the province. —30— High resolution, downloadable images of the 2005 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art
