"This photograph was made near the town of
Tingri, just off the road from Lhasa to Kathmandu. The clear air
at 14,000 feet made the magnificent peaks of the Himalayas seem
very close. The woman, her son and the horse presented the
necessary foreground and human element in the otherwise austere
landscape. The mountain in the background, Cho Oyu, over 8000
metres high, was actually more than 40 miles distant. By using a
long-focus lens, I was able to "draw" the mountains
closer, making them an important part of the composition. On this
trip I was accompanied by Galen and Barbara Rowell. Galen made a
similar image that was selected by the Dalai Lama for inclusion in
Galen’s picture book of Tibet. When I look at this image, I
think about Galen and Barbara and the loss to the photographic and
mountaineering worlds by their deaths on August 11, 2002."Thomas B. Eastman is an amateur photographer
who earns his living as a lawyer in Towson, Maryland. His frequent
travels have enabled him to use his fifty-plus years of
photographic experience to document his ventures. He uses
primarily 35 mm but is also accomplished in large-format and
fine-art photography. Recently he has used the digital medium,
from which he has made numerous large colour prints. His
photographs have been displayed at several locations in the
Baltimore area, and his slide images have been presented to a wide
variety of groups and organizations. He prefers to remain an
amateur, with the luxury of creating the images that express his
personal artistic expressions rather than trying to please others.
