Banff Mountain Grant Recipients
1997Mountain Culture awarded four 1997 grants after jury review of
28 proposals from four countries.
1997 grants helped support the following projects:
Life at the End of the World - the Gauchos of Patagonia:
Noted American photographer Beth Wald will document this unique South American mountain
culture. Lone riders, straggly herds of sheep, weatherbeaten shacks and abandoned
estancias are some of the images we can expect in the resulting photo essay and
exhibition.
In the Footsteps of Sella
Pat Morrow, a Canadian photographer, filmmaker, author and adventurer, will travel to
Sikkim to circumnavigate Kanchenjunga, following in the footsteps of Italian photographer
Vittorio Sella. Sella's historic photographs from his 1899 trip will be combined with
Morrow's contemporary images to document the trip and celebrate the centennial of the
original circumnavigation.
Vertical Challenge '98
Brad Zdanivsky and a team of Vancouver climbers and filmmakers will film Brad's ascent of
a 600 metre face on the Squamish Chief. He is returning to climbing after a 1994 accident
left him a quadriplegic.
Bandaloop in Banff
The vertical dance company "Project Bandaloop" will direct a two-week workshop
at the Banff Centre in the summer of '98 for climbers and dancers from around the world.
They'll perform in Calgary, Banff and Grotto Canyon.
Mountain Culture grants are
awarded annually to projects that creatively communicate the environment, human heritage,
inspiration and adventure of the worlds mountain places.
