Banff Mountain Grant Recipients
1998
Mountain Culture awarded four 1998 grants.
"We are delighted to support these projects," says Bernadette McDonald,
director of the Centre. "They represent the full range of our mandate, from technical
mountaineering, to performance art, to the social and cultural issues of mountain areas
around the world." A selection committee reviewed 43 grant applications for projects
in 13 countries.

The Caribou Commons project, from the Whitehorse-based Yukon Conservation Society,
documents the entire range of the Porcupine caribou herd in sound, images and music. A
concert and multi-media show resulting from this project will tour North America, starting
in early 1999.

Journalist William Lindesay of Beijing is hiking and photographing wilderness sections
of the Great Wall of China. His book is due out in July, 2000.

The Alpine Club of Canada receives support for their Safety Papers project, a
publication of safety and technical information about mountain travel. Their book will be
published in November, 1998.

Ottawa architect Bill Semple is documenting traditional Tibetan architecture and
studying the impacts of environmental change and the loss of traditional building skills.
Mountain Culture grants are
awarded annually to projects that creatively communicate the environment, human heritage,
inspiration and adventure of the worlds mountain places.
