Jim Mitchell: Thermal Abstract
“The Mammoth Hot Springs area, within Yellowstone National Park, is known primarily for its colourful travertine terraces. However, it has other limestone formations that are equally fascinating and photogenic, and I discovered this one while driving the Upper Terrace Loop. The Loop permits parking near some formations, allowing a close photographic vantage point without having to contend with the crowded boardwalk below. I was first drawn to this scene by the intriguing mounded shape and the brilliant colours of the travertine, accented by the dark background and the afternoon lighting. The crowning visual touch for me was the stark appearance of the decaying trees and their shadows. Ironically, this view is actually the back side of the formation and was largely overlooked or ignored by other visitors — another lesson learned about not following the crowd.”
Jim Mitchell is an avid amateur photographer from Dallas, Texas. Although he is a relative newcomer to the field, his work has already been recognized in a number of prestigious juried events, international competitions and national publications, including a recent feature article in Shutterbug magazine. Primarily self-taught, he hopes to pursue this passion on a full-time basis upon retirement in a few years from his present CFO position. In the meantime, he travels as much as time permits, focusing on the American West and select foreign locales in order to further develop his artistic eye and hone his photographic skills.
