David Stubbs: Moontime in Cave Falls
“Photographing the Greater Yellowstone at night has been an ongoing project since 2000, when I first wrote and shot a story about the surreal experience while on staff at the Jackson Hole Guide. The diversity of natural features throughout the region under the ephemeral light of the moon instilled a sense of visual bliss the first time I saw it. Combined with light-painting, the creative possibilities are limitless, and the dream-like experience of all-night shoots in solitude always proves to be adventurous. This image was shot on a frigid November night in 2006, just before Yellowstone National Park closed for the season. I had been photographing for two hours in below-zero temperatures in the mist and wind that surrounded the falls, when I took shelter in this cave. The stillness in such close proximity to the raging falls provided an amazing opportunity to explore the rich quality of light across the scene.”
