Scott Dimond: Sunrise at Glory Hole
“Just to the northeast of the Jasper townsite sits a small spring-fed pond. In photographic circles, it is known as the ‘Glory Hole’ for its uncanny ability to produce beautiful sunrises even when the surrounding area is overcast. On this particular morning in December, the temperature was -30° C with light snow flurries. Bundled in a parka and with chemical hand warmers stuffed in my gloves, I set up my equipment and then sat alone at the pond’s edge convinced that even the ‘Glory Hole’ could not produce under such miserable weather conditions. But true to its name, just as the sun rose, a small gap formed in the clouds to the east and a wonderful sunrise presented itself for a few brief minutes. I would not see the sun again for three days as the ensuing blizzard blanketed the area and shut down all the roads.”
