Wendy Aupers
Wendy Aupers is the Corporate Communications Specialist for
the Town of Okotoks, a community of about 13,000 in the
foothills of the Canadian Rockies. Her work focuses on
engaging residents in the good governance of their community
and on Sustainable Okotoks initiatives which cover a
broad range of community actions aimed at balancing the
social, economic and environmental needs of the community.
Water management and water conservation are key
initiatives within her responsibilities. Okotoks residents
have recognized that there are limits to growth. They have
created a Municipal Development Plan that reflects their
desires to maintain the quality of life they currently enjoy
and to live within the natural carrying capacity of the
Sheep River and its ability to provide potable water and to
accept treated wastewater. This means "right-sizing" the
community to accommodate a buildout population of
approximately 25,000-30,000, while reducing water
consumption by 30% per capita. Using innovative technology,
creating and adopting a variety of public information and
education campaigns and forming partnerships across a broad
range of stakeholders have helped Okotoks reach some of
their water management and water conservation goals.
Wendy is an award-winning environmental educator and
communicator with 20 years of experiencing in working with
various levels of government, non-profit groups and
businesses.
Wendy has an Honours Bachelors of Outdoor Recreation from
Lakehead University. She is an avid traveller and adventurer
and likes spending time in her art studio painting and
designing fish pottery.
