Travel deep into Canada’s “Serengeti” with National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Wade Davis, who’s come home to Canada to advocate for the imminently threatened headwaters of the Skeena, Stikine, and Nass Rivers in Northern B.C.

Davis is the author of fifteen books and is a noted Canadian anthropologist, ethnobotanist, and photographer, whose work has focused on worldwide indigenous cultures. He holds degrees in anthropology and biology, and a Ph.D. in ethnobotany, all from Harvard University. His many film credits include Light at the Edge of the World, an eight-hour documentary series produced for the National Geographic Channel.  In 2009 he received the Gold Medal from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society for his contributions to anthropology and conservation, and he is the 2011 recipient of the Explorers Medal, the highest award of the Explorers’ Club. In 2012 he will receive the Fairchild Medal for Plant Exploration.

He brings his latest book, The Sacred Headwaters: The Fight to Save the Stikine, Skeena and Nass to Banff – and will speak to the impending drilling and mining that threatens this lush wilderness area.

“In a rugged knot of mountains in the remote reaches of Northern British Columbia lies a stunningly beautiful valley known to the First Nations as the Sacred Headwaters. There, on the southern edge of the Spatsizi Wilderness, the Serengeti of Canada, are born in remarkably close proximity three of Canada’s most important salmon rivers: the Stikine, Skeena and the Nass. Against the wishes of all First Nations, the government of British Columbia has opened the Sacred Headwaters to industrial development.” *

Prelude to Everest: Ian Mitchell and George Rodway
When he died on the 1921 expedition to Everest, Alexander Kellas was not only Scotland’s greatest Himalayan mountaineer: he had more Himalayan experience and had climbed more peaks above 6,000 meters than any man alive. He was, and still remains, one of the mountaineering world’s unsung heroes. Prelude to Everest is his dramatic, untold story.

Ian Mitchell is the author of six hillwalking books and a past winner of the prestigious Boardman-Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature. George Rodway, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Utah and Research Fellow at University College London's Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme Environment Medicine and has been an active mountaineer in the Americas, the Himalaya, and Europe for over 30 years.

“A compulsive and fascinating account of one of the great pioneers of Himalayan climbing” – Doug Scott

Elephant Enigma: Dag Goering and Maria Coffey

Into the World of Elephants. Pursuing a passion for exploring the world has led veterinarian and internationally published photographer Dag Goering and celebrated writer Maria Coffey on countless expeditions for over two decades. Now they are on a new journey. After a chance encounter with an elephant in Rajastan altered the course of their lives, they set out to explore the world of elephants, both captive and wild. Throughout India, Southeast Asia and Africa, they discovered that human encroachment into elephant habitat is forcing these giants from their natural lowland environments to seek refuge in mountainous regions. From the gangs of bulls in Kenya raiding farmers fields to temple elephants in India breaking free of their chains to turn on their keepers, the issue of human-elephant conflict is a daily problem, and one that Goering and Coffey are helping to research and mitigate through Elephant Earth Initiative, which they founded in 2008. In this multi-media presentation, they share their personal journey through the world of elephants, and their discoveries about the struggles and challenges facing the world’s largest land mammals.

Residents in a wildlife corridor, such as the Canmore-Banff-Lake Louise area, can appreciate the complex issues that inevitably arise for townsites when faced with human-wildlife interface. Just imagine if the bears, cougars, and elk were the size of elephants!   Dag Goering’s Elephant Enigma exhibit will be on display throughout the Festival.

One Mountain Thousand Summits: Freddie Wilkinson
In the early morning hours of August 1st, 2008, more than three dozen climbers readied in the starry darkness for their final ascent to the summit of K2, the world’s second highest mountain.  In little more than 24 hours, 11 climbers would be dead, and three would be seriously injured. News of the K2 catastrophe rocketed through the international media. What happened?  How had the mountain killed so many, so quickly? Authored by alpinist and climbing writer Freddie Wilkinson during the Banff Centre's Mountain Writing program, One Mountain Thousand Summits is an insider’s account of what really happened on K2 that day. His writing has appeared in Rock & Ice magazine and Alpinist.

Check out the latest news from from Freddie Wilkinson.

    Freedom Climbers: Bernadette McDonald
Reconnect with renowned author Bernadette McDonald as she weaves a passionate and literary tale of adventure, politics, suffering, death and—ultimately—inspiration. Her latest work, Freedom Climbers, tells the story of a group of extraordinary Polish adventurers who emerged from under the blanket of oppression following the Second World War to become some of the world’s leading Himalayan climbers. Although they lived in a dreary, war-ravaged landscape, these curious, motivated, and skilled mountaineers created their own free-market economy under the very noses of their Communist bosses and climbed their way to liberation, pioneering winter ascents of some of the most challenging mountains on earth.

“Between 1980 and 1989, Polish climbers were giant, worldwide leaders as high-altitude climbers, especially in the Himalayas. This volume documents those charismatic leaders and their iconic climbs in a defining chapter of Himalayan climbing history.” —Reinhold Messner

Head to higher ground during this year’s Voices of Adventure interview, as climber, writer, and psychologist Geoff Powter explores the climbing life of alpinist Edurne Pasaban. Now at the pinnacle of her career, Pasaban is the first woman to officially climb all fourteen of the 8,000-metre peaks.

Raised from childhood in the high mountains of the Spanish Basque Country, Pasaban gained experience in the Alps and Andes before successfully climbing Everest in 2001. In 2004, she summited K2, but at a high toll: frostbite cost her two toes. She was leader of the 2011 Endesa Everest Without Oxygen Expedition, which turned back at 8000 metres due to altitude sickness suffered by team-members. Hours after returning to base camp, Pasaban played a crucial role in the coordination and financing of a rescue operation to assist several of her comrades who were on neighbouring Lhotse.

Over the past decade, Pasaban has been a formidable player in the race to summit the fourteen 8000ers – most without supplemental oxygen - finishing her quest in Spring 2010.

    The Canterbury Trail: Angie Abdou
Angie Abdou is a fiction writer and teacher with a Ph.D in English Literature from the University of Calgary. Her first short story collection Anything Boys Can Do (2006) has been called “an extraordinary literary debut”, and her first novel, The Bone Cage (2007) was praised by the Globe and Mail for its “beautiful writing”. Her most recent book, The Canterbury Trail, has been widely praised and was listed as #4 on the bestseller list by the Calgary Herald.

Living, skiing, and playing in Fernie, B.C, Abdou is familiar with the nuances of ski culture. Following Chaucer’s wonderful medieval portrayal of pilgrims going to Canterbury, The Canterbury Trail digs deeply into the psyches of those who live to ski and who go on their own pilgrimages to small mountain towns.

"Abdou’s characters are on a quest for healing and meaning that calls to mind Arthurian legend... But as much as they are divided by economics, class, and culture, Abdou’s pilgrims are all searching for the same thing, and it’s not just primo powder. They’re all looking for belonging." (The Winnipeg Review)

30 Years of Insanity: Tami Knight
And now, for some comic relief. Cartoonist and author Tami Knight is renowned for her poignantly-funny cartoons that reveal the true life of dirtbag climbers around the world. Knight also has an impressive climbing resumé that includes many first ascents. Born in Vancouver, BC, where she grew up hiking and skiing in Canada’s Coast Mountains, Knight also developed a lifelong love of climbing. Heading out on extended roadtrips and to the big walls closer to home with Peter Croft, Hamish Fraser, and other west coast climbing pioneers in the late 70’s, Knight and friends put up many new routes in Squamish – and, with Croft, she completed the first Canadian ascent of Astroman (V, 5.11) in Yosemite.

From her first cartoon “Hamish Gets the Milk”,  to a regular feature for ten years in Climbing magazine and five books of cartoons, she continues to capture the comedy of the climbing in magazines like Alpinist and The Canadian Alpine Journal. Sure to keep you rolling in the aisles, don’t miss this multi-media retrospective of how much fun climbing really is!

Tami’s cartoons will also be on exhibit throughout the Festival until the end of November in the Max Bell Auditorium foyer.

Experience the unimaginable with Greg Hill as he sees the altimeter on his watch click over to 2,000,000 feet. This, his latest impossible feat – and a new world record – of climbing and skiing two million vertical feet in 365 days, is equivalent to climbing from sea-level to the summit of Everest 69 times. Hill, a pioneer of many first descents, has summited and skied over 165 mountains, including the 21-day Northern Monashee traverse during which he summited 21 peaks. Hill has skied Mt. Blanc in a day (11 hours, 12,000 ft), was the first North American to climb and ski 40,000 ft in 24 hours, and proceeded to best this by climbing and skiing 50,100 ft in 24 hours – a world record at the time.

Many Banff fans will remember The Unbearable Lightness of Skiing, a 2008 film finalist, and audience favourite produced and directed by Hill. See him live on-stage this year to talk about his remarkable year-long quest.

“So much was invested into this silly goal, that finally achieving it was overpowering. Having (my wife) there to witness the final moment, with friends (and champagne)…it was incredible.”

Hold on to the edge of your seat with Simone Moro (Italy), and Cory Richards (USA), as they recount their landmark climb: the first winter ascent of Gasherbrum II (8035m) in the Karakoram Range of Pakistan in February 2011.  The team, which also included Dennis Urubko from Kazakstan, reached the summit after a three day push battling deteriorating weather and relentless cold. Their harrowing descent involved poor visibility, hidden crevasses, and an avalanche involving all three climbers – with Moro digging out his two companions.

The climb marks Simone Moro’s third first ascent of an 8000-metre in winter – climbing Shisha Pangma in 2005 and Makalu (with Urubko) in 2009. He is also the author of two books including 8000 meters of Life which he shared with Banff audiences at the 2007 Festival. Urubko is one of the 22 people to have succeeded on all fourteen, 8000-metre peaks, and is a longtime climbing partner with Moro. Richards – who has a rich family climbing history, having climbed with his father since the age of five – is now the first American to have summited an 8,000-metre peak in winter.

"Overall, the reward was worth the punishment but the near miss at the end really put it all in perspective. No summit, no matter how amazing, is worth dying for. I've never ever been so scared in my life...it was like looking at your own death coming for you...fast. Ending up on top (of Gasherbrum II) was rebirth and something that I will never ever take for granted." – Cory Richards, from Rock and Ice

Pushing the Boundaries of Storytelling: Activating your Online Project

This workshop will discuss different aspects of multi-platform projects for online viewing. Projects that will be discussed are not websites for a film, nor are they simply clips or blogs – they are stand-alone interactive projects (sometimes sister projects to a film) but always intended for a first time audience. In the case where there also is a film, they can contain additional footage and audio, background information, personal stories – but are creations that push boundaries on how stories are told.

On-line interactive projects can deviate from the linear structure of traditional filmmaking because of the interactive relationship viewers have with the content.   Broadcasters now demand additional content be produced – over and above a film itself and many filmmakers are scrambling to figure out this aspect of contract demands to produce high-quality content for these purposes.

Learn first-hand from those who have been forging a path to award winning on-line content. Moderated by National Film Board Executive Producer, Tracey Friesen; with filmmakers/interactive storytellers Dianne Whelan and Leanne Allison; interactive designer, Jeremy Mendes; and National Geographic Vice-President, Digital Media, Susan Poulton.

They say getting there is half the adventure – and sometimes it turns out to be the whole adventure! So why do some of us continue to choose the quickest route to our destination – flying there instead of biking, skiing, walking, or rowing there? For athletes, writers, filmmakers, gear-testers and others who make a living through adventure, taking the slow road is often essential to the plan. For the rest of us (who still have day jobs), it may seem like a pipe dream. Who has the time to give six weeks to just getting to the start of the adventure? Does the experience’s worth grow exponentially the slower we go? Is there a place for adventure under the time-crunched realities of modern life?

Join our panel of adventurers as they discuss travel conveniences, earth-friendly transport, the choices we make and how they affect both our experience and the planet. Moderated by Dan Austin of 88bikes Foundation.

    Producer: Jeff Ostenson*
    Director: Jamie Howell*

A sect of mountain bike enthusiasts has gone underground – the skate punks of the forest, unwelcome and under pressure to leave. Pedal- Driven examines the shared philosophies of stewardship and sustainabilityfrom both sides, using the Pacific Northwest as a proving ground. Trailer.

Sarah McNair-Landry is no stranger to extraordinarily arduous expeditions. Born and raised on Baffin Island, McNair-Landry comes from a family of arctic enthusiasts. Her impressive expedition resume began in her mid-teens when she crossed the Greenland Ice Cap by ski, dog-sled, and kite with parents Matty McNair and Paul Landry.  In 2004, at the age of 18, she became the youngest person to ski to the South Pole – an unsupported 52-day expedition of over 1,100 km .

In 2007 McNair-Landry completed a 2,300 km crossing of Greenland (South to North), kite skiing, cross-country skiing and hiking, and in 2008 participated in the 2008 Global Warming 101 Expedition to Ellesmere island, raising awareness about climate change. In 2009, she crossed the Gobi desert in 35 days by kite buggy, and in 2010 led an expedition to the North Pole. Most recently, accompanied by her brother Eric, McNair-Landry kite-skied across the Northwest passage, a journey of over 3000km. Pushing oneself to the limit takes on a new meaning with this young adventurer.

If modern British adventure has a face, it looks a lot like Leo Houlding. Known for his adrenalin-fueled exploits, he is one of Britain's top climbers and among the best in the world. A veteran of scores of epic ascents, Houlding specializes in free climbing the most technical peaks and biggest walls in the world. He is also an experienced BASE-jumper and is at the forefront of para-alpinism (climbing up, then flying down). He continually pushes the limits of exploratory adventure by taking the ultimate in adventure sports to the most extreme environments.

Houlding has graced the Banff stage several times. He co-produced and was featured in The Asgard Project – winner of Best Film on Climbing at the 2010 Festival, and one of the most highly acclaimed climbing films of all time.   In 2010 Leo Houlding topped it all by completing a long-term Yosemite project – The Prophet a E9 7a/5.13d route on El Capitan. After failing on a number of occasions following his first attempt in 2001, Houlding says completing The Prophet is a lifetime achievement and a real highpoint in an already remarkable climbing career.

Dervla Murphy, one of the world's first woman solo adventurers, is stepping in for Dan Austin (Co-Founder and Executive Director of the 88bikes Foundation) who was going to do this talk. Unfortunately Dan is unable to attend, however we are indeed thrilled that Dervla Murphy is a such perfect match for this talk – we didn't even have to change the title!

Dervla (who is one of our guest speakers on Thursday, November 3, 7:30 p.m.), now almost 80,  is the spokesperson for Sustrans, a British organization that is trying to connect the UK with bike trails. Dervla will be chatting about Sustrans initiatives as well as speaking about sustainable transportation in general. This will be a rare opportunity to connect with a truly remarkable woman who has such a rich history on two wheels – and who continues to be such a devoted cycling and sustainable transportation advocate.

We wish Dan a speedy recovery and we welcome Dervla to this Coffee Conversation.

    SPOIL
    (USA, 2011, 44’, Environment)
    Producer/Director: Trip Jennings
Photographers join the Gitga’at First Nation of British Columbia in an attempt to photograph the illusive all-white spirit bear. Respect for their local guide, who is deeply connected to the bear and its environment, heightens the drive to protect a place threatened by a proposed oil pipeline. Trailer

    Towers of the Ennedi
    (USA, 2011, 14’, Climbing)
    Producer/Director: Renan Ozturk*
The Ennedi Desert of Chad is a hot, sand-scoured and unfriendly place. But from its vast belly rise clusters of breathtakingly lovely spires, towers, and rock formations. Veteran climber Mark Synnott – known more for his far-flung adventures than his technical accomplishments – brings young climbing stars Alex Honnold and James Pearson to the Ennedi to explore its untouched landscapes.

Arctic: Life in the Deep Freeze
    (UK, 2011, 60’, Culture)
    Producer/Director: Nicolas Brown
The Arctic is the harshest environment on Earth – hardly any food grows, it’s dark for months, and temperatures stay well below freezing for much of the year. Yet four million people manage to survive – and flourish – here. With incredible access into the most intimate lives of charismatic Arctic residents, this film showcases their ingenious strategies to thrive.

    Yosemite Falls High-Line
    (USA, 2011, 4’, Sport)
    Producer/Director: Renan Ozturk*
Dean Potter’s latest adventure demonstrates a cutting-edge high-line rigging that blends classic tightrope gear with recent slack-line discoveries during a perilous crossing of Upper Yosemite Falls.

    Halo Effect
    (USA, 2011, 48’, Sport)
    Producer: Steve Fisher, Pete Jasienski
    Director: Steve Fisher
Three of the world’s best kayakers take a two-month journey to the paddling meccas of Iceland and Norway. While they search inside the Arctic Circle for rapids and waterfalls that have never been run, they are also searching for the elusive moments when the stars align and everything goes perfectly. But sometimes – in the blink of an eye – things go horribly wrong. The inevitable externalities of their main goal are what they call the ‘halo effect’.

Genuine exploration and honest adventure may be things of the past. Does anyone take on expeditions simply for the thrill of adventure and personal experience anymore? Most modern adventures seem to be more about self-promotion, raising money for a cause, selling a story or feeding sponsorship dollars. These kinds of high profile, expensive and globally-promoted expeditions seem to be the norm of the day – but are they the only way? And what’s wrong with them anyway? Our moderator, Geoff Powter, and panel will discuss the ‘whats’ and ‘whys’ driving expeditions today. With Leo Houlding, Freddie Wilkinson, Dianne Whelan, and others.

It is recognition of inspiring leadership and conservation achievement that contributes to protecting the living planet.  On behalf of all Canadians, Parks Canada is honoured to receive this award in recognition for efforts to create new protected areas and to reintroduce species at risk into their natural habitat. This work could not have been successful without collaboration with Aboriginal peoples and our many partners, and the remarkable support of Canadians across the country.

    Sfinga: The Sphinx
    *
    (Slovenia, 2011, 70 min)
    Producer: Vojko Anzeljc
    Director: Gregor Kresal*
On the north face of Triglav, the highest peak in the Julian Alps, there is a giant wall known as The Sphinx. Daunting and imposing, it has stirred the imagination of Slovenian climbers for centuries, and is included itself, as a character in this dramatic feature-documentary. With dizzying heights and sharp angles, this film recreates the heroic efforts of the first team to climb the Sphinx in 1966, and more recently, highlights the wall’s fi st free climb. On the summit, the generations come together in a Who’s Who of Slovenian mountain culture.  Trailer
