Faces of Music & Sound
Céline Grangey
Audio Engineer, France
Audio Assistant Work Study Program
After completing her final year in the music recording and producing program at the Paris National Conservatory of Music, Céline came to The Banff Centre for the summer 2005 audio assistant work-study program to continue putting theory into practice.
“The program at the Conservatoire is very intense. I came to Banff to have the opportunity for a lot of hands on experience with all the aspects I’d learned about in Paris.” she said. “You can really delve deep into audio topics here. For example, we had a two-day workshop just on mastering.”
With over 75 concerts and many other events during the Banff Summer Arts Festival, Céline had a wide variety of projects to work on as well. “I wanted to record jazz and classical – and Banff’s festival has both. I’ve had mostly classical sound engineering experience in live recording, so it’s been fantastic to record so many and diverse jazz performances.” This summer Céline also had a chance to record voice performance, as well as mix music on a project involving visual artists. “It’s such diverse experience,” she says. “One of the really great opportunities I had was to work with multi-channel audio. I’d learned a lot about theory of multi-channel by my professors at the Conservatoire, but it’s my first time actually trying it out.” Céline was also able to create a DVD involving The Banff Centre’s dance program – her first professional DVD project.
The best thing? “It’s an exceptional work environment. The engineers here have lots of different professional experience, and enjoy sharing their knowledge. There is always someone to help you to improve." Céline plans to take further advantage of the expertise of Banff’s audio staff and fellow engineers from the work-study program. She plans to stay in touch with them, continuing to send them her recordings for their feedback and advice, especially as she writes her final paper on the ambisonic multi-channel technique of recording to complete her diploma from the Paris Conservatoire.
