Brian Brett

Born in Vancouver in 1950, Brian Brett studied literature at Simon Fraser University from 1969 to 1974. He has been writing and publishing since the late 1960s. In the early 1970s, he began working as a freelance journalist and critic for various publications and newspapers, such as the Globe and Mail and The Vancouver Province, where he was the poetry critic for two years and had his own column. He is currently writing a monthly newspaper column called “CultureWatch.” Brett inaugurated the BC Poetry-In-The-Schools program and has taught or given workshops on writing across Canada. He has been a member of organizations, including PEN International, The League of Canadian Poets, the BC Federation of Writers, and the Writer’s Union of Canada, of which he is the chair-elect for 2005. He has given readings on the CBC and other media, conducted a national reading tour, and read for Harbourfront, the Vancouver International Writers’ Festival, the Saltwater Festival, the National Book Festival, and the Canada Council. Brett currently lives on a farm with his family on Salt Spring Island, BC, where he cultivates his garden and creates ceramic forms.
