John Ralston Saul is both a Companion in the Order of Canada and Chevalier in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de France. His works include: On Equilibrium: The Six Qualities of the New Humanism, Reflections of a Siamese Twin: Canada at the End of the Twentieth Century, Voltaire’s Bastards: The Dictatorship of Reason in the West, The Doubter’s Companion: A Dictionary of Aggressive Common Sense, and The Unconscious Civilization, which won the 1996 Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction. He is the author of five novels. He is also the only Canadian to receive the Neruda Medal, recently presented by the Chilean government to 100 intellectuals and artists around the world to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Pablo Neruda.
