This publication presents a
challenge to the traditional association of ceramics with function.
Much ceramic work continues to be considered in relation to the
vessel - the cup, plate and teapot - but there is much more to
consider. The four artists in this publication work with ceramics in
a broader context, looking at the history, cultural use and social
value of clay. Artworks by Millie Chen, Jamelie Hassan, Baco Ohama
and Garry Williams are discussed in texts by Sandra Buckley, Amy
Gogarty, D.L. Pughe and Reginald Woolery. Sylvie Gilbert, curator of
the exhibition, provides an introduction.
A groundbreaking essay by Peter
White, “Whither Function: Ceramics in the Comfort Zone,” directs
ceramics out of the comfort zone to discuss possibilities beyond the
traditional framework of function.
