Important questions have arisen around the exhibition of Aboriginal art in white institutions. This publication looks at these issues in the context of one such event at the Walter Phillips Gallery. As curator Helga Pakasaar writes, “How, then, can the artists in this exhibition trust that they are not left serving some symbolic agenda that is other than their own, yet again enacting some white man’s version of themselves? They can’t.” Several essays delve into this unresolved problem.
