DOUG BLACK, QC, CO-CHAIR
(Calgary) Doug Black is a senior partner and a vice chair of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP. He also serves as the co-chair of the firm’s national energy practice. His practice involves providing legal, policy, and strategic advice to governments and corporations. His specific legal expertise is in the areas of corporate, commercial, and energy law. In addition, he is corporate secretary of a major publicly listed Canadian corporation, is chair of a Canadian income trust, and is chair of a leading health care business. Doug is currently completing the Institute of Corporate Directors, Corporate Governance College.
In addition to his role as co-chair of the Campaign for The Banff Centre, Doug is a public member of the Alberta Press Council, a member of Canadian Institute of International Affairs and the Canada West Foundation, and a governor emeritus of The Banff Centre.
MICHAEL J. NORRIS, CO-CHAIR
Michael is deputy chairman for RBC Capital Markets and is responsible for senior account coverage. He is a member of the firm's Executive Committee. Following a successful career with Mobil Oil and Gulf Canada, Mike joined RBC in 1987 as an investment banker covering a range of companies and industries. From 1992 to 1998, he ran the firm's Alberta operations and energy practice, returning to Toronto in 1998 as head of Investment Banking. Subsequently, he was appointed head of Global Banking and a member of the firm's Operating Committee. Prior to his current appointment, he was co-head of the firm's Capital Markets Services division with global responsibility for corporate and investment banking and equity, research, sales and trading. He is currently Co-Chair of the Banff Centre Capital Campaign and a member of the Foundation Board of Directors of St. Michael’s Hospital.
LORNE R. BARCLAY
(Toronto) Born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Lorne graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor of commerce degree, became a chartered accountant (Coopers and Lybrand) and received a masters of business administration from the University of Toronto.
He is currently vice chair of Howard, Barclay & Associates Ltd., an investment counseling firm for high net worth individuals, based in Toronto, and is past chair and CEO of Smith Packaging Limited and its group of companies.
Lorne’s extensive involvement in community activities has included serving as a governor and board chair of the Shaw Festival; board chair of the Hugh Macmillan Rehabilitative Centre; president of the Arts Foundation of Greater Toronto; governor of Crescent Boys School; trustee of Bloorview Macmillan Centre and director of Bloorview Macmillan Children’s Foundation.
A member of the Young Presidents Organization from 1976 to 1993, he served in numerous leadership roles on universities in Thailand, Africa and Istanbul, and was elected to the International Board of Directors from 1987 to 1991. Currently an international director of the Chief Executive’s Organization and a member of the World President’s Organization (WPO), he chaired WPO’s Vietnam University in 1997 and was education chair for the Prague University in 2002.
Lorne and his wife Rosemary live in the Lawrence Park area of Toronto and are the proud parents of a daughter and two sons and grandparents of two adorable grandchildren. Their love of travel takes them to homes in Bonita Springs, Florida, Lake Muskoka, Ontario, and the Cotswolds, England.
Lorne is a director and past president of the Beaumaris Yacht Club and is a member of the Rosedale Golf Club, the Albany Club of Toronto, Twin Eagles Golf Club, Naples, Florida and the New York Athletic Club. Other interests include music, theatre, the opera, enjoyment of gourmet food and fine wine and the continuing challenge of golf and fitness.
BRUCE BENTLEY
(Edmonton) Bruce Bentley is president and chief executive officer of Maclab Enterprises an Edmonton-based privately held real estate development firm with operations in Alberta, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, and the United States. Prior to his appointment in 1998, Bruce served as Maclab’s vice-president, finance, and controller. He joined Maclab in 1995 and having spent the previous 15 years in Calgary and Toronto, primarily with Bramalea Inc.
Bruce is a graduate of the University of Alberta School of Business, the past president of the University of Alberta Alumni Association and a member of the Senate of the University of Alberta.
He is currently a director of the Winspear Foundation and a member of the Alberta Heart Institute Strategy Council. He is a former director of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce (1999 – 2001), was the co-chair of the Tourism and Entertainment Cluster of the Greater Edmonton Competitiveness Strategy Initiative (2000 – 2003), was a City of Edmonton representative on the River Valley Alliance from 1996 to 2001.

(Calgary) Linda has practiced law in various capacities for over 26 years, most recently as general counsel at the University of Calgary. Currently Linda is a member of the Law Enforcement Review Board of Alberta and a public member on the Alberta Board of Certified Management Accountants.
ADRIAN BURNS
(Ottawa) Adrian Burns is a board member of Shaw Communications Inc. and a former member of the Copyright Board of Canada and former commissioner of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. She also currently serves as vice-chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Arts Centre and as a board member of several business and community organizations, including the Western Independent Producers Fund, Carthy Foundation, and Canadian Athletic Foundation.

MICHAEL B.C. DAVIES
(Toronto) Michael Davies is principal of Davis & Co. which is engaged in M&A advisory and investment banking and principal investing.
Michael joined RBC Dominion Securities (now RBC Capital Markets) in 1986 after spending a number of years in the securities industry, latterly as a member of the Oil & Gas Group of Morgan Stanley in New York. His prior experience also includes acting as vice-president and chief financial officer of the Polar Gas Project, an Arctic natural gas pipeline mega project. He headed RBC Dominion Securities’ M&A Group from its formation in 1986 to 1996 and acted as the firm’s senior M&A advisor until 2002.
Michael holds Bachelor of Commerce and Law degrees from the University of British Columbia and is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators. He is a director of Keyera Facilities Income Fund, Synenco Energy, Inc., Echoex Energy, and RBC Capital Partners.

(Calgary) As managing partner of the Calgary office of NATIONAL Public Relations, Beth Diamond is responsible for leading the public relations, investor relations, government relations, and community consultation practices of the largest corporate communications firm in Western Canada.
Beth has been instrumental in setting up and supporting such organizations as the Canadian Centre for Energy Information, the primary source of information, data and educational materials pertaining to Canada’s energy sector and energy-related issues; the Canadian Coalition for Responsible Environmental Solutions, which represents business organizations, industry associations and consumer advocacy groups that support a Made in Canada solution for environmental issues; and Energy INet, a growing Canadian network, designed to be a quick, agile link between today’s energy challenges and the innovation of tomorrow.
Beth holds a BA from McMaster and a Masters Degree (English) from the University of Calgary. She is a member of the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) and also trains financial professionals through The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

BONNIE DUPONT
(Calgary) Bonnie DuPont is a senior executive with Enbridge Inc., a leader in North American energy delivery. She has overall corporate responsibility for information technology, human resources, public and government affairs (including community investment), corporate secretarial/governance matters, as well as environment, health and safety, and corporate security. She provides leadership for organizational change and integration of new acquisitions.
With more than 20 years of executive experience in both the energy and Canadian agri-business sectors, she has extensive experience in regulated and de-regulating environments and extensive knowledge of and skills in organizational change and employee relations.
Bonnie serves on the Board of Alliance Pipeline; is chair of CustomerWorks LP; is a director of the Canadian Wheat Board; and has served as chair of the Advisory Council to the Faculty of Management at the University of Calgary. She is also on the Board of the Calgary Petroleum Club. She has been recognized, in 2003 and again in 2004, by the Women’s Executive Network and Richard Ivey School of Business in their annual listing of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada.
Bonnie holds a Bachelor’s degree (Great Distinction) from the University of Regina and a Master’s degree from the University of Calgary.
JAMES D. FLECK, OC
(North York) James D. Fleck is currently the chair of the Council of Business and the Arts in Canada. He was the founding president of The Power Plant, Contemporary Art at Harbourfront, president of the Art Gallery of Ontario Foundation, and past chair of the Board and president of the Art Gallery of Ontario. He is also the chair of the Ontario Minister’s Advisory Council for Arts and Culture.
James was the chair and CEO of Noah’s Flood Inc., which produced Benjamin Britten’s Noyes Fludde as Canada’s cultural contribution to the 50th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter with performances in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and San Francisco. He has also been the director, treasurer, and vice-president of the National Ballet of Canada.
He was the 2003 winner of the Edmund C. Bovey Award for Leadership Support of the Arts, a national award that recognizes individual members of the business community who have had the vision to contribute leadership, time, money, and expertise to benefit the arts.
James is a philanthropic supporter of several organizations including the Stratford and Shaw festivals, Toronto Symphony, Tafelmusik, Soulpepper Theatre, University of Toronto Faculty of Music, and the National Arts Centre.
DAVID G. FOUNTAIN
(Halifax) Born in Halifax, David Fountain was raised in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where his father, Sheldon L. Fountain, founded and taught at the Fred C. Manning School of Business at Acadia University. A graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, David is a private investor and active community volunteer. He is the immediate past chair of the Board of Trustees of the IWK Health Centre Foundation, where he continues to serve as a member of the Board. Prior to becoming the board chair of this foundation, he was chair of the "It’s About Family" capital campaign for the IWK Health Centre. In the past he has served as a member of the Board of the National Ballet of Canada, a member and chair of the Board of Neptune Theatre, and as a member of the Board and chair of the Nova Scotia International Air Show.
SUSAN J. GLASS
(Winnipeg) Susan Glass is a western Canadian at heart. After attending schools in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Vancouver, BC, New York, NY, and Winnipeg, Manitoba, she attended the University of Manitoba graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1967.
A 15-year career with Air Canada in Winnipeg and at corporate headquarters in Montréal involved computer and systems management experience as well as involvement in the marketing and promoting of Air Canada's computer expertise to other members of the travel industry.
Following Susan's return to Winnipeg in 1984, her activity as a community volunteer began in earnest.
Serving on the Board of Directors of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for 13 years, she chaired that Board from 1995 to 1998 and continues to chair its major gifts committee. Her continuing degree of commitment to that organization reflects her belief in the integral pride of place that the RWB occupies in the image and identity of Winnipeg.
In 2000 Susan chaired the third annual Canadian Arts Summit held at The Banff Centre, after having participated in the first two fledgling years as the Summit began to take shape as a forum for the 40 largest arts organizations in Canada.
Susan currently is a national governor of the Shaw Festival. Other voluntary directorships have included the University of Manitoba Board of Governors, St. Boniface General Hospital, St. Boniface General Hospital Research Foundation, Canadian Club of Winnipeg, and the University of Manitoba Alumni Association.
Susan lives in Winnipeg with her husband, Arni Thorsteinson. Together they share many interests, in particular, travelling the open road on their Harley Davidson motorcycles.
ROSS GRIEVE
(Edmonton) Ross Grieve was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is president and chief executive officer of PCL Construction Group Inc., and is responsible for all operations within the PCL family of companies. PCL is the largest general contracting organization in Canada, and one of the largest in North America. The organization’s average annual billings are in the range of $3.5 billion, and projects span the commercial, institutional, industrial, civil, and multi-family market sectors of the construction industry. Ross joined Poole Construction Limited (the predecessor to PCL) in June 1969 in his hometown of Winnipeg, after completing a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Manitoba. Since that time, he has worked in positions of increasing responsibility throughout the PCL companies.
At a community level Ross is very active, and is a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta, Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta and Northwest Territories, the Canadian Olympic Foundation, The Miller Thomson Foundation, The Bone and Joint Health Institute of Alberta; as well as the Board of Directors of Melcor Developments Ltd.; and honorary director of the Edmonton Business Council for the Visual Arts. He is also a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the World Presidents Organization.
MARY E. HOFSTETTER
(Banff) Mary E. Hofstetter was appointed president and chief executive officer of The Banff Centre in May 2001. Prior to coming to The Banff Centre in July 1999, in the position of executive vice-president and chief operating officer, Mary served as president and chief executive officer of Sheridan College in Ontario from 1988 to 1996, and as general manager of the Stratford Festival from 1996 to 1998. Mary has served on numerous education and arts boards, on the Ontario Jobs and Investment Board, and as chair of the board of the Canadian Bureau for International Education and of the Council of Presidents of the Ontario Colleges.
JAMES S. KINNEAR
(Calgary) James S. Kinnear graduated with a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto in 1969 and qualified as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) from the University of Virginia in 1979. He has always believed in innovative approaches to business development and the globalization of business generally. James entered the investment business with London, England based-investment companies in the late 1960’s. After returning to Canada in 1970, he joined Midland Doherty in Toronto followed by the D. W. Taylor & Co. Ltd. in Montreal where he became a partner responsible for investment research. While in Montreal, he served as vice president of the Montreal Society of Financial Analysts and was directly responsible for Europac, an international investment consortium initially comprising six Canadian pension funds (managed by Baring Bros., London).
Based upon his experience as an analyst in the resource sector, James recognized the attractiveness of allocating cash flow associated with high quality properties in the oil and gas business to pension funds and to conservative retail investors. He moved to Calgary in 1980 and established Kinnear Financial Consulting Limited. Pengrowth Management Limited was incorporated in 1982 to concentrate on energy investments on behalf of institutions and private investors.
In 1988, he established Pengrowth Corporation and subsequently formed the Pengrowth Energy Trust through a $12.5 million initial prospectus offering. This model for growth has become the benchmark for the industry. Pengrowth Energy Trust has completed 40 separate asset acquisitions and 11 equity issues to have a current enterprise value of in excess of $1.7 billion CDN, making it one of the largest Canadian Energy Royalty Trusts.
James is an active supporter of many political and philanthropic events and he believes that a strong and healthy community enriches society. Pengrowth Management supports causes and institutions both financially and with volunteers. Pengrowth Management became the building sponsor of Calgary’s premier hockey facility in 2000, ensuring the continuation of professional hockey in Calgary. Pengrowth Management also purchases and donates Calgary Flames hockey tickets to charitable agencies enriching the lives of over 4000 children from Calgary and southern Alberta as they attend an NHL game in the Pengrowth Saddledome.
Pengrowth Management’s major charitable focus is the Rockyview General Hospital Invitational golf tournament. Since its establishment by James 10 years ago, the tournament has raised $1.8 million toward hospital programs and equipment. With annual proceeds exceeding $300,000 per year, this tournament has become one of the largest charitable tournaments in the country.
James believes very strongly in supporting his community and as such is
an active volunteer raising funds for the YMCA, Inn From The Cold, and
numerous other charitable organizations. He presently serves on the Board of
Directors of the Canadian Olympic Trust, is a member of the Calgary Chamber
of Commerce, and a member of the Development Council for the Rockyview
General Hospital.
LYALL D. KNOTT, QC
(Vancouver) Lyall Knott is senior partner of Clark Wilson LLP’s Business Law Group. Born and raised in Vancouver, he obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1971, and Bachelor of Laws degree in 1972, both from the University of British Columbia. He obtained a Masters of Law from the University of London, England, in 1973, and in 1985 he was appointed to the rank of Queen’s Counsel. In addition to having a broad base of experience with both public and private corporations, he has an extensive background and understanding of the workings of government.
Knott has been the recipient of the 2000 Blythe Eagles Volunteer Service Award, the Commonwealth Medal for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, and the Medal of Merit Award for outstanding citizenship.
Lyall Knott is also very active in the community. He is currently chair of the Board of Directors of the University of British Columbia Foundation, and a member of the Consular Corps of British Columbia, the board of Harmony Airways, the Vancouver Board of Trade, and the Sir John A. MacDonald Society. He is also the founding director of the Vancouver International Airport Authority, and is on The Salvation Army Greater Vancouver Advisory Board.
JENS LINDEMANN
(Los Angeles) Trumpeter Jens Lindemann is hailed as one of the most
celebrated soloists in his instrument's history. Jens has played in every
major concert venue in the world – from the Philharmonics of New York, Los
Angeles, London, Manchester, Munich, Hamburg, Lucerne, Berlin, Tokyo's
Suntory Hall, and even the Great Wall of China. His career has ranged from
appearing internationally as an orchestral soloist, recording with the
Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and being heralded as an official trumpeter for the NHL Stanley Cup finals, to playing lead trumpet with the renowned
Canadian Brass. Jens has also won major awards ranging from Grammy and Juno
nominations to winning the prestigious Echo Klassik in Germany as well as
receiving an honourary doctorate. He has won first prizes in the most
important classical trumpet competitions in the world, made numerous
television and film appearances and performed at London's “Last Night of the
Proms” for over 40,000 people.
Classically trained at the renowned Juilliard School in New York, Jens has
performed as soloist and recording artist with classical stars such as Sir
Neville Marriner, Sir Angel Romero, Doc Severinsen, Charles Dutoit, Gerard
Schwarz, Eiji Oue, Bramwell Tovey, Mario Bernardi, and Jukka Pekka Saraste
and has recorded for the BMG, EMI, CBC, and the BBC.
A prize-winner at numerous competitions including the prestigious ARD in
Munich, Jens continues to perform with orchestras including the London
Symphony, Philadelphia, Beijing, Auckland, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Buenos
Aires Chamber, Atlanta, Washington, Seattle, Dallas, Detroit, Houston,
Montreal, Toronto, National Arts Centre, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary,
Warsaw, Welsh Chamber, I Musici de Montreal, I Virtuosi di Roma, St. Louis,
and Mostly Mozart at Lincoln Center. Currently a professor of music at UCLA,
Jens is a long-term Banff Centre supporter and faculty member.
JEANNE LOUGHEED
(Calgary) Jeanne Lougheed has been a distinguished patron of The Banff Centre for more than 25 years. A native Albertan and a talented dancer and singer, she was a summer student at the Centre throughout her years as a university student. She championed arts funding throughout her husband Peter’s tenure as Alberta Premier from 1971 to 1985.
Jeanne Lougheed has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Royal Le Page, Northwestern Utilities, Canadian Western Natural Gas, Atco Gas Services, and Sears Canada Inc. A tireless volunteer, she has also served on numerous national, provincial, and locals arts organizations, including the Canada Council, Tri-Bach Festival (chair), National Ballet of Canada (honourary governor), Banff International Television Festival (founding director), Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Dancer Transition Resource Centre (member of Advisory Council), Canadian Association for Community Living, Alberta Heart Foundation (chair), Lupus Society of Alberta (Honourary Patron), and Teens of Distinction (board member).

THE HONOURABLE PETER LOUGHEED, PC, CC, QC
(Calgary) Peter Lougheed served as Premier of Alberta for fourteen years from 1971 to 1985. He was a partner at the Calgary-based law firm of Bennett Jones LLP from 1986 to1999, and is currently counsel at the firm.
He is a director of seven Canadian companies and a member of the Trilateral Commission.
Peter graduated from the Harvard Business School after receiving his degrees in Arts and Law from the University of Alberta in Edmonton. In 1986, he was a recipient of the Harvard Business School’s Alumni Achievement Award.
He was co-chair of the private sector group which sold the merits of the Canada–U. S. Free Trade Agreement to the Canadian public in 1988, and in 1991, at the request of the Prime Minister, co-chaired the Canada–Japan Forum 2000, the bilateral task force set up to strengthen the relationship between Japan and Canada.
Peter is a member of the Privy Council of Canada and is a Companion of the Order of Canada. He is Chancellor Emeritus of Queen’s University and holds eight Honorary Doctor of Laws Degrees from Canadian universities.
Peter and his wife, Jeanne, live in Calgary. They have four children.
DON LOWRY
(Edmonton) Don Lowry is the president and chief executive officer of EPCOR. Since joining EPCOR in 1998, Mr. Lowry has led the transformation of EPCOR into a national energy company, doubling its earnings and assets in three years. Prior to joining EPCOR, he spent more than 20 years in the telecommunications industry, including six years as president and chief operating officer of TELUS Communications Inc.
Don graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), followed by an MBA degree. He is a graduate of the Harvard Advanced Management Program and the Banff School of Management. He serves on several boards including the SaskTel, Hydrogenics Corporation, the Canadian Electrical Association, and Alberta Climate Change Central boards.
JOHN B. MCWILLIAMS, QC
(Calgary) John McWilliams is senior-vice-president, general counsel and secretary of Nexen Inc., an independent, Canadian-based global energy company active in exploration, development, production and marketing of crude oil & natural gas in Canada, the U.S., the United Kingdom, Yemen, West Africa and Colombia. John has over 25 years experience in the oil and gas industry. Prior to joining Nexen in 1987, he was employed by energy companies in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. His current responsibilities include legal, environmental, health and safety, corporate affairs, and government relations. He is a member of the company's executive committee and has held various business project responsibilities. He has taken a leadership role in corporate social responsibility issues including the development of an International Code of Ethics for Canadian Business.
He is a frequent speaker at major forums including the International Bar Association, World Petroleum Congress, the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice, the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, and the Conference Board of Canada.
John was educated at Lakefield College, University of Ottawa and Queens University and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1974 and the Alberta Bar in 1981. He was designated Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.) in 2004. He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, Law Society of Alberta, Canadian Bar Association, International Bar Association (vice-chair of the Corporate Responsibility panel), a former drector of Transparency International Canada, former president of the Canadian Petroleum Law Foundation, director of Canadian Institute of International Affairs and director of the Calgary Opera Society. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of Institute for Global Ethics (Canada), and founding director of Bank West.
In 2003, he was named in LEXPERT as one of the top general counsel in Canada, one of the 50 most influential in-house counsels in North America by InsideCounsel magazine in 2006, and winner of 2006 Canadian General Counsel Award for Corporate Governance.
MARILYN MILAVSKY
(Calgary) Marilyn Milavsky is a designer of women’s fashions and currently owns her own company, Designs by Marilyn. In her former life, Marilyn worked in the health care field as a cardiology nurse and in the last ten years has been committed to volunteering her time and her creativity for fundraising projects in both health and the arts.
She has helped create events for non-profit organizations such as Hospice Calgary, Stars Air Ambulance, the Glenbow Museum, Esther Honens Competition, Alberta Ballet, and Calgary Opera.
Marilyn is on the Board of the Calgary Opera, the Advisory committee for the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, and is currently working on a multi-media production that will include opera, ballet, poetry and film. Marilyn is passionate about the importance of bringing arts and culture into our daily lives, for it is from this core of activity and creativity that we are able to discover the interconnectedness of our humanity.
GERRY PROTTI
(Calgary) Gerard Protti is executive vice-president, Corporate Relations, for EnCana Corporation. His responsibilities include regulatory services and international, Aboriginal, public and community relations. In addition, he is accountable for EnCana's programs regarding corporate responsibility, environment, health and safety, and security.
Gerry was the founding president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), and executive director of the Independent Petroleum Association of Canada (IPAC). His extensive experience includes roles as assistant deputy minister with the Government of Alberta's Energy Department, and senior positions with the Alberta Treasury department and the Canadian Energy Research Institute.
Gerry was born in Edmonton and received a Bachelor of Arts, Honours (Economics) from the University of Alberta in 1974, and a Master of Arts (Economics) from the University of Western Ontario in 1975. He has completed the Wharton Business School's Advanced Management Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Gerry is on the Board of the Public Policy Forum, a member of the University of Alberta Board of Governors, past chair of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (2003-2004) and past chair of the Alberta STARS Foundation (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society). In addition, he is a member of the Alberta Economic Development Authority, on the Board of the Canadian Energy Research Institute, a governor of the Calgary Petroleum Club and a member of the Advisory Council to the Faculty of Business at the University of Alberta.
SHAUNA ROLSTON
(Toronto) Having been named "Young Artist to Watch" by Musical America,
cellist Shauna Rolston is considered to be one of the most compelling
musicians of her generation. Following her formative studies at The Banff
Centre, Shauna earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in art history from Yale
University and a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. Since
her New York City Town Hall debut at the age of 16, Shauna continues to
perform regularly in major concert venues and festivals around the world.
Gifted prodigy turned masterful innovator, Shauna is an enthusiastic
advocate and performer of the music of our time. She has given the world
premieres of an astounding number of works written for her. Her CD This
is the Colour of My Dreams, which won Best Classical CD at the 2002 West
Coast Music Awards, is dedicated to concerti and concert pieces for cello
and orchestra written for her by Heather Schmidt, Christos Hatzis, Chan Ka
Nin, and Kelly-Marie Murphy.
As a chamber musician, Shauna has performed and recorded with many
pre-eminent artists and ensembles including the Gallois Quintet, pianist
Menahem Pressler, and pianist and composer Heather Schmidt. The latter
collaboration began with critically acclaimed duo recitals at the Winnipeg
New Music Festival in 2002, and developed with performances as part of the
Governor General of Canada’s state delegation visit to Finland and Iceland
in 2003, and a tour of the Maritime Provinces through Debut Atlantic in
2004. In 2005 Shauna and Heather embark on a North American tour which
includes performances in Ottawa (National Arts Centre), Vancouver, Victoria,
Dallas, Boston (the Harvard Musical Association), and two benefit concerts
in Grand Cayman.
In addition to her busy concert and recording career, Shauna is a passionate
and devoted educator. Much in demand as a guest master class instructor,
Shauna is also a professor
of cello and co-head of the string department at the University of Toronto
and a visiting artist for the Music & Sound programs at The Banff Centre.
JULIE M. SHAW
(Calgary) Julie Shaw is the VP, Facilities Design and Management for Shaw Communications Inc. (Shaw), a diversified communications company whose core business is providing cable television services to approximately 2.1 million homes. Julie is a member of the Interior Designers of Canada; the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications and the Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia and Alberta, as well as a member of the Board of Directors for Corus Entertainment Inc. Julie is also an active member of Shaw’s Charitable Donations Committee. Julie holds a Bachelor of Design Science degree from Arizona State University and is the secretary of the Board for the Shaw Foundation, a philanthropic organization founded by Francis E. Shaw in 1970.
KENNETH D. TAYLOR, OC
(New York) Kenneth Taylor served in the Canadian Foreign Service from 1959 to 1984. As a diplomat, his career ranged from trade development responsibilities in Guatemala, Detroit, and London; foreign-aid related matters in Pakistan; crisis management in Iran, and enhancement of Canada’s image in New York.
Since his resignation from the Foreign Service in 1984, his private sector experience included six years as a senior vice president of both Nabisco Brands/RJR Nabisco. His primary worldwide responsibilities involved the formulation and implementation of policies to strengthen the $18 billion corporation’s international interests and relationships.
During the 90s, he both independently and through partnership with the Ottawa consulting firm, Global Public Affairs and Taylor and Ryan Inc., New York, counselled clients on issues of political risk, international marketing, and strategic accommodation with government. His board memberships include energy companies in Calgary, New York, and Mexico City; financial service institutions in Toronto, and consumer goods enterprises in California. He was installed as chancellor of Victoria University in the University of Toronto in June 1998 and completed his term in office in 2004. Currently, he is chair of Taylor & Ryan, Inc., New York.
In recognition of his role as Canadian Ambassador in Iran he received the United States Congressional Gold Medal and the Order of Canada (Officer).
ARNI THORSTEINSON
(Winnipeg) Arni Thorsteinson is president and a principal of Shelter Canadian Properties Limited, which invests in and develops diversified property portfolios. He has over 30 years extensive experience in the real estate industry in areas such as mortgage underwriting and placement, real estate securities sales and corporate mergers and acquisitions.
In his early career, Thorsteinson worked for Richardson Securities of Canada. He was responsible for the management of Real Estate Finance Department as well as Richardson Securities of Canada's subsidiary, Lombard Corporate Advisors Ltd.
Arni has held corporate direction of organizations including Aspen Properties Ltd., Ben Moss Jewellers Ltd., Huntington Real Estate Investment Trust, Onex Corporation, as well as the Tri-White Corporation among others. He has held several trusteeships with organizations including the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts, and the Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology and has served as a director for the Conference Board of Canada and the Council for Canadian Unity. Mr. Thorsteinson was awarded a Commemorative Medal of the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation and is a member of the Business Council of Manitoba.
THE HONOURABLE BRIAN V. TOBIN, PC
(Toronto) Brian Tobin is a senior business advisor with Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP in Toronto, bringing an added perspective to FMC's strong capabilities in serving the business needs of leading and developing Canadian businesses.
From October 2000 to January 2002, Brian served as the federal minister of
industry, working with all sectors of the Canadian economy to improve
Canada's innovation performance. Previously, he served as the premier of
Newfoundland and Labrador from 1996 - 2000. He won two consecutive majority
governments in provincial elections held in February 1996 and February 1999.
As premier, Mr. Tobin set an aggressive development agenda. Newfoundland and
Labrador's economic turnaround was dramatic during his tenure. From 1998
-2001 the province's gross domestic product was one of the fastest growing
in Canada.
Brian served as a member of Parliament from 1980 - 1996 and as Minister of
Fisheries and Oceans in the federal cabinet from 1993 - 1996.
Brian is currently a director for Lions Gate Entertainment, Aecon Group Inc., and Persona Communications. He is also honourary chair for the Easter Seals of Ontario capital campaign to raise money for their specialized camps, and is a special advisor for the Canadian Youth Business Foundation.
Brian has completed his memoirs, All in Good Time, published by Penguin
Books. He and his wife, Jodean, live in Toronto and have three children.
JODEAN TOBIN
(Toronto) Jodean Tobin is manager of BVT Associates Inc. From 1997 to 2001, she was a clinical research associate for Dalhousie University and Innovus Research Inc., responsible for monitoring medical research projects on coronary heart disease and the FDA’s Orphan Drug Program. From 1992 to 1996, she coordinated clinical research trials with the Department of Infectious Diseases, Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. With a background in nursing, she has extensive experience as a registered nurse in neo-natal and surgery units. Jodean holds a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Ottawa.
Jodean has served as honourary chair for the Families Can Beat Cancer Campaign for the Canadian Cancer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, honourary chair of the Rick Hansen Tenth Anniversary Neurotrauma Initiative, and honourary chair of the Annual Walk for Aids, Newfoundland and Labrador. From 1988 to 1992, she was community area chairperson for the Canadian Cancer Society in Nepean, Ontario.
She and her husband, the Honourable Brian Tobin, reside in Toronto and are the parents of three children.
Pamela Wallin
(New York) Pamela Wallin is the senior advisor to the President of the Americas Society and the Council of the Americas in New York. In Canada, she serves on several corporate boards, including Bell Globemedia, Canada’s premier multimedia company with ownership in CTV and the Globe and Mail; and on the board of Gluskin Sheff & Associates, an investment and wealth management firm. Pamela is a member of a special Advisory Board for BMO Harris Bank, and offers her time, insight and experience to universities, healthcare, and cultural organizations and many other volunteer groups.
The career of the Canadian-born journalist, diplomat, and entrepreneur has now spanned more than thirty years and several continents. After working for CBC Radio and the Ottawa bureau of the Toronto Star, Pamela was recruited by CTV. She hosted Canada AM, went on to become Ottawa bureau chief, and anchored the CTV weekend news. And in 1992, she became the first Canadian woman to co-anchor the nightly national television newscast Prime Time News.
In 1995, Pamela founded an independent television company, Pamela Wallin Productions, through which she hosted and produced a live nightly interview program. She also hosted the Canadian edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, garnering the highest ratings ever for a network production.
Although her work as a journalist covered all aspects of domestic and international politics, Pamela has dedicated much of her professional career to coverage of the Canada/U.S. relationship. In November 2001, she traveled to New York to host the highly successful “Canada Loves New York” rally, where more than 23,000 Canadians gathered to show support for the American people following the terrorist attacks of September 11th.
Pamela has thirteen Honorary Doctorates. Among many other honors, she was named to the Canadian Broadcasting Hall of Fame; she was the Distinguished Honoree of the Canadian Society of New York; she received a national Visionary Award in Canada; and was twice recognized by Queen Elizabeth II for her public service and achievements.
Pamela has just completed her four-year term as Consul General of Canada in New York. She was appointed to the prestigious post in 2002.
Pamela is the author of three books, including her best selling autobiography Since You Asked (1998) and Speaking of Success (2001).
